CO2Wall Base System

The basic system of CO2Wall consists of elements that can accommodate between 25 and 40 plants per square meter. In this way, we purify the air in a natural, sustainable way.

The substances that are captured from the air by CO2Wall include;

  • CO2– On average, one m2 per year reaches 3.7kg. CO2 from the environment. We also use mycorrhizal fungi. Plants can absorb up to 8 times as much CO2 with mycorrhizal fungi as without mycorrhizal fungi.  Source Hawkins et al., 2023, Current Biology, 33, R560-R573

  • N2– Nitrogen per m2 is 1.8kg annually. N2 removed from the air (depending on the degree of pollution source WUR.)

  • Particulate matter PM10 and PM25 is captured via the leathery leaves from the vegetation mix

  • NOx is also captured, which also stimulates the growth of the vegetation

  • Heavy Metals - Heavy metals are often found around roads and result from social pollution.

  • PFAS - during analyses after tests, it has been shown that we capture even smaller Pfas particles.

  • Pesticides and Herbicides - Tests in rural areas have shown that we found and captured many traces of wind-borne pesticides and herbicides.

  • Aerosols - an important effect on climate change is also due to Aerosols, these have a greater density around roads, thanks to our systems these are filtered out of the ambient air.

  • To a lesser extent, the system also filters the following from the ambient air; VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), Ammonia and Sulfur Oxide.

Other major advantages of the CO2Wall system

  • Annual oxygen yield of 2.8kg. /m2
  • water consumption just 8-12% compared with existing systems
  • Greening the living environment using 300% more plants /SQM
  • Huge expansion for biodiversity for both flora and fauna.
  • CO2Wall absorbs 45% of ambient noise by preventing sound reverberation
  • It prevents vandalism.
  • Causes a drop in temperature of up to 3-5 degrees.
  • Reduced energy consumption because the façades are protected from direct sunlight and other weather influences.
  • It reduces waste streams worldwide and is 100% recyclable.
  • By simply adapting the vegetation to the environment, it can be        applied worldwide.
  • CO2Wall contributes to a better BREEAM and LEED score.
  • It is highly fire-retardant or even fire-resistant

CO2WALL is 100% circular.

The raw material for the elements is recycled PVC, which comes from the global waste streams. The more meters we make, the smaller the waste mountain becomes

We guarantee that the 100% recycled raw materials we buy do not end up in landfills. After use, these are collected by us to serve 100% as a new raw material for the next cycle.

Our goal is to remove 25,000 tons of PVC waste from society every year, which directly creates a better living environment.

As already mentioned, the elements are CO2 neutral and are mainly manufactured in the Netherlands.

CO2WALL works closely with one of the most renowned plastics manufacturers in the Netherlands. They have many international facility's worldwide, including the US and Canada.
Manufacturing proximity to these markets allows us to act quickly to change production location. That way we always have a facility close by and so impact on environment due to transport is kept to a minimum.

No heavy equipment is required for installation, so the CO2 impact is minimal. All of this leads to a
as high an efficiency as possible.

Biodiversity

CO2wall consists of a balanced mix of vegetation. Our selection criteria leads us to the use of plants that remain green and that are not proliferating. Our research continues: for example, we use plants that capture nitrogen and store them in the soil, so that other plants can get their nutrition from them. We also add minerals and fungi through our irrigation system that not only stimulate growth biologically, but also increase CO2 absorption.

In addition to providing us with a large varied foliage and soil life, we also create housing for all kinds of animals and endangered plants. We have spent a lot of time on the behavior of the various fauna in terms of nesting and flight paths, and positioned the vegetation in such a way that traffic does not hinder the fauna and vice versa.

CO2Wall and infrastructure

With CO2wall, we immediately ensure that cities become greener. A problem in older cities, and especially in social housing estates, is that there is no space available for green spaces, which are precisely the neighborhoods with the highest population density. Because CO2Wall can be applied vertically to existing buildings, there is no need to create extra space for it. By cladding the current concrete structures, they are hidden from direct sunlight, so that the buildings do not heat up during the day. While normally at an outside temperature of 25 degrees the surface temperature of concrete is already 51.6 Celsius and at 30 Celsius this rises to 57.5, at temperatures above 30
the temperature rises to over 60 and more. The direct result is that the radiant heat and therefore heat stress disappears, the average temperature in the environment drops by 3-5 degrees Celsius. Another advantage is that the covered objects are hidden from the weather influences, CO2Wall works as an insulating blanket in addition to absorbing (traffic) noise from outside, it keeps heat out in the summer and cold in the winter. As a result, energy savings of up to 35% are achieved.

The CO2Wall system can be used indoors, so we can also purify the air indoors at airports or offices. By working with indirect LED lighting, even installation in tunnels, where no daylight is available, is possible.

Even on solar panel fields. we can place the CO2Wall Base System, this way the solar panels get an better cooling and so an efficiency.

Green living Advertising

Another advantage is that due to the surface of the noise barriers, they can be used extremely well as environmentally friendly advertising objects. By adjusting vegetation in the right positions. For example, letters, but also logos or pictograms can be made.
